Coexist Project

Project Description

As the name of the installation Coexist suggests, There is an interest in bio mimicry (models, systems, processes, and elements to emulate or take inspiration from nature in order to solve human problems sustainability) and investigating if different species of birds will coexisting together in the colonies. This will be achieved by altering the birdhouse holes. By varying the holes, this will determine the types of birds that will habitate in a size specific hole.It is my hope as well that Coexist will create a natural sound installation that will house the voices of different birds, if indeed they can cohabitate together.

I want to use this installation to stand as a metaphor for the idea and slogan “wrong side of the tracks”.
Illustrating this idea by placing the colonies side by side, bright white pre-fab Purple Martin homes adjacent the hand painted graffiti attacked natural Purple Martin homes. I am concerned whether the aesthetic of each colony is a factor in the birds choice of residence.
These colonies can be seen as Pre fab structures like the many “lofts” that have begun to over run Atlanta in every section of town.

Are we beginning to loose the character of old structures and neighborhoods to give into gentrified prefab?
Although while providing a home to the birds, at the expiration of the project,
these homes must be taken away for new developments forcing them to seek shelter else where.
Will this be an issues with the residence on the Beltline?
